9-1-1 for Kids
April 28 , 2008
Fellow CALNENA Members,
The 9-1-1 for Kids organization provides important educational information about 9-1-1 to school children throughout the State and Country.
CALNENA is proud of our partnership with this fine organization. One of the programs that 9-1-1 for Kids promotes is the Local Heroes Program. The purpose o this program is to recognize heroic youngsters that called 9-1-1 to save a life or property or to report a crime. The heroes are nominated by the PSAPs. Both the child and the dispatcher are recognized at a Heroes Ceremony in Sacramento. This year’s ceremony is on Monday May 19th.
9-1-1 for Kids is still accepting nominations for the awards. If you know of a worthwhile nominee please fill out the accompanying form and fax it to 9-1-1 for Kids at (714) 894-5424. I can tell you from personal experience that participation in this program is very rewarding both for the child and the dispatchers involved in the incident. Please take the time to nominate any potential candidates from your area.

Sherrald McMurray, His Widow, Receives the Award
on Bill's Behalf
Dear CalNENA, NENA and Members,
I want to let you know how special it was to join you at your 2008 Annual Conference and to receive those beautiful awards for my late husband, Bill McMurray. I know Bill would have been so proud and humbled to receive such an honor. I could tell that a lot of thought, planning and consideration went into these awards, along with your caring so dearly for Bill and the impact that he made on all of you.
Your deep compassion and support towards Bill’s mother, Bea; our daughter, Geri and me was truly appreciated, as well. From the “invitation” to the “ plane tickets” to “being escorted” to the “Treasure Hunt” to the “Tribute for Bill,” it was all very special for us. Our hotel accommodations were superb and we felt like royalty. We were so pleased with everything from beginning to end. I am so glad we came!
I know that Bill really cared about the work that CalNENA and NENA were doing. I truly believe it gave Bill a healthy sense of pride and appreciation to know that he was a part of something that not only served the public at the state level, but also at the national level as well. I know he took his involvement with NENA and CalNENA seriously. If Bill were here today I believe he’d say that he was extremely fulfilled and excited to be a part of this growing organization. I believe Bill’s message to you would be “continue to serve the public with the highest form of respect and integrity.”
I used to tease Bill about “NENA” being the other woman, because he was so dedicated to this organization. The true is that Bill was a “servant at heart” and NENA was the perfect vehicle to help him live out his “servant hood.” As for me, I learned to share Bill with NENA and value and accept her into our life.
Bill would be so proud and honored to know that he had inspired the very first “Award for Excellence.” On behalf of Bill; his mother, Bea; his siblings; and our daughters, Geri, Amanda, and Meredith (Meredith is now serving in Iraq as a Marine…please keep her in your prayers), and on behalf of myself…we all thank you for these very special awards, for your extraordinary friendship to him and your expression of kindness towards us.
Thank you! Sherrald McMurray
